Dr. C. Saura chairs the session ¨Tau Propagation and Cellular Interaction 1¨ during the 16th AD/PD 2022 International Conference on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases and related neurological disorders in Barcelona (Spain). Dr. Saura shows the last results of the lab that indicate that loss of presenilins causes tau phosphorylation and aggregation in mice.

The annual Scientific Conferences of the Instituto de Neurociencias-UAB were celebrated at Sant Feliu de Guixols (Girona) on October 5-7. Doctoral students Anna del Ser, Maria Dolores Capilla and Angel Deprada presented their research projects. In addition, Dr. Mar Puigdellívol, associated researcher of our group at INc-UAB, presented her project on microglia role in Alzheimer’s disease during a plenary lecture.

New study finds that ¨Loss of Presenilin function enhances tau phosphorylation and aggregation in mice¨

Our new study published today in Acta Neuropath Communications reveals a Presenilin-dependent loss of function mechanism leading to tau pathology in neurodegeneration. Doctoral student Carlos Soto-Faguás is the first author of this study that shows that deficiency of Presenilins causing familial Alzheimer’s disease leads to tau pathology in dementia.The study opens new avenues for regulating tau pathology in neurodegeneration. Published two new studies on glutamatergic transmission in neurons and microglia in eNeuro and Cells

The first collaborative study with the labs of Drs. J. Rodríguez and A. Miñano (Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona), is featured in the last Issue of eNeuro and it shows a new mechanism of glutamate AMPAR degradation in neurons. The study published in Cells in collaboration with R. Franco and G. Navarro (Universitat de Barcelona) reveals a crosstalk between Adenosine A2AR and NMDAR in microglia. Read more. Published new study in eLife showing that Presenilin-1 regulates axon growth in neurons during development

The main familial Alzheimer’s disease-linked gene Presenilin-1 regulates axon growth through EphA3/myosyn IIA signaling. Doctoral student Miriam Javier is the first author of this study that revelas a new mechanism by which the Alzheimer’s disease-linked gene Presenilin-1 maintains neuronal morphology during development. This new study published in eLife suggests for the first time a new molecular mechanism linking neurodegeneration and cancer. Read more

Selenium supplementation ameliorates neuropsychiatric and memory symptoms in Alzheimer’s disease mouse model

Our new study shows that diet supplementation with selenium, an element highly abundant in nuts, shellfish, fish and pork, reverses anxiety and memory deficits in old 3xTg-AD mice. Selenium decreases aggregated tau pathology but not amyloid plaques. This study, in collaboration with Drs. A. Van der Jeud and R. D’Hooge (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven), is published in the last issue of Scientific Reports 8:6431.
